Looking at ways to transform existing concrete? Here are some techniques to help everyone achieve their stylish makeover.
1) RESURFACE
Concrete resurfacing is a cost-effective way to help fix the overall appearance of your worn concrete. It's important to keep in mind that this process is more of a decorative coating rather than a structural overlay. Your expert concreter will need to assess the viability of your existing concrete structure before resurfacing.
2) SCORING & SAWCUTTING PATTERNS
An excellent option for both new and old slabs, scoring is an easy way to add depth and texture to an otherwise blank slate. Scored concrete features a series of groves that have been cut into the concrete to create a distinct pattern or design.
3) CLEANING
Cleaning your concrete will help improve the aesthetics and longevity of your concrete. The first step is to clean away leaves and debris. Treat stains appropriately - there are specific methods for cleaning various stains such as oil stain, dirt or rust. The first step is try using a high pressure cleaner - if you don't own one, you can borrow or hire one. If using chemicals, ensure those chemicals won't harm your concrete - some chemicals will compromise your concrete.
4) FIX CRACKS
Assess if a crack is a simple fix or a sign of a bigger problem.
Know what the right material is. Wide cracks in concrete are best filled with a concrete patching compound. Hairline cracks can be repaired with a concrete caulk or liquid filler.
5) REPAIR EXPANSION JOINTS
Failing to repair expansion joints would see the edges eventually start to expose. This damage could lead to costly, and in some instances, irreparable damage to concrete, along with annoying weed growth. For more information read our blog post "HOW TO REPAIR FAILING CONCRETE EXPANSION JOINTS"
6) PAINTING OR STAINING
Painting or staining concrete is a great way to restyle your concrete on a budget. Visit our web page to read these helpful blog posts: "YOUR GUIDE TO STAINING CONCRETE", and "DO'S AND DON'TS WHEN PAINTING CONCRETE"
7) ENGRAVING CONCRETE
Concrete engraving, or concrete etching, is the use of special tools and equipment to make patterns and designs in existing concrete.
8) OTHER IDEAS
You can also add bricks, tiles, wood panels or decorative stones. All these steps can give a whole new look to your concrete.
