TINTED SEALANTS FOR CONCRETE

Applying sealers has proven to help maintaining the integrity, prolong the lifespan and improve the overall aesthetics of concrete. In this post we address your options and considerations when using tinted sealants.

  • Tinted sealants provide all the protective benefits of a clear concrete sealer, with an added vibrance of colour.

  • By using a tinted sealer, you save labour time and money VS colouring your concrete, then adding sealant.

  • Both solvent- and water-based sealers can be tinted.

  • You can purchase a pre-tinted sealer. PROS & CONS: The pre-mix option offers a consistent colour, however, the colour range is limited, reducing your ability to colour-match.

  • If you opt to to add tint to a clear sealer, it’s important to use a pigment that is compatible with the sealer you are using. For example, if the sealer is a solvent-based acrylic, only use a solvent-based acrylic tint system, ideally, from the same manufacturer. It's important to calculate the amount of pigment you add to your sealant - this will ensure a consistent colour for future application.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE PURCHASING YOUR SEALANT

  • To calculate how much sealer you need, firstly workout the total square meter area of your concrete surface. One litre of sealer will cover approximately 3-5m² of concrete depending on the porosity of the concrete. ALSO CONSIDER the number of coats recommended by the manufacturer.

  • It's important to allow each coat to dry first before applying another coat.

  • Decide if you are adding a pattern/design.

  • Ensure certain the pigment colour selected will achieve the colour you desire. Factoring multiple layers of tinted sealant is likely to impact the final colour.

  • Compare your cost & time vs the cost of outsourcing the job.

BEFORE YOU START SEALING YOUR CONCRETE

  • Ensure you patch surface damage, remove weeds and properly cleaned the surface.

  • Put a shopping list together. Include cleaning products and application tools.

  • Block access to your driveway until your sealant has dried.

  • Check the weather forecast.
