Concrete is a strong, affordable and versatile material that can quickly enhance your home's value by providing a range of creative, attractive features but many homeowners neglect to add or refresh their sealant which can cause all kinds of problems for your concrete.
REPELS MOISTURE
Sealant repels moisture which can cause moss growth. Moss can damage surfaces it grows on, including roofs and hard surfaces. If mosses get a good foothold, they can hold in lots of moisture that can damage the surfaces below. This can happen on things like walkways, driveways, and outdoor areas.
PROTECTS COLOUR
Sealant will protect colour fade and weather wear and tear caused by harsh UV rays, moisture, stains from oil, dust and dirt.
REDUCES RISK OF CRACKS
Sealant works as a barrier between elements which can weaken concrete and eventually lead to cracks appearing, these elements include; oil, chemicals, salt, grease, weather exposure, UV rays and moisture, to name a few.
HERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT CRACKS APPEARING IN YOUR CONCRETE
Driving heavy vehicles on concrete not designed to withstand the weight.
Not allowing enough time for your concrete to properly cure. While concrete takes 28 days to completely cure, spray your concrete with water a few times each day for the first week after it's been poured - especially in hotter and drier weather.
Failing to add control joints. Concrete shrinks and consumes water in the hydration process due to temperature changes. Concrete slabs eventually crack due to the natural movement of the underlying soil. This is why control joints are important.
Mix the proper amount of water. One of the most common mistakes DIYers new to concrete make is to add too much water to the dry concrete mix for easier mixing, which leads to weak concrete and a high risk of cracking.
Compact the base. The first step after excavation is to compact your base - If the base beneath the slab isn’t compacted, it can settle later, which can eventually lead to cracking.
Using rebar will help strengthen your concrete slab.
PREVENTS STAINING
Concrete is a hard, durable material that can last a long time, but even concrete is susceptible to the enduring Australian weather. A good sealer will help to maintain the appearance of your concrete by protecting it from contaminants such as dust, dirt and oil which all lead to stains.
ADDS CURB APPEAL
Sealant will make it easier to clean and maintain your concrete, which will enhance curbside appeal.
